My kid and his teammates art project made entirely of paper plates entitled snake.io

In my coaching and leadership advisory work, I often encounter that pivotal moment when decisions feel heavy, when the path forward feels uncertain. It might be a senior or a mid level leader exploring an opportunity or a fork in the road of their career journey so far, or an individual at a personal or professional turning point. Across these contexts, one guiding principle holds true: decisions rooted in emotional intelligence, especially motivation, create clarity and conviction.

In my work, I often hear questions like, “How do I know this is the right decision?,” or “Why do I feel like I am spinning on wheels and going nowhere?” I know from my experience that this type of uncertainty can stem from a sense of obligation or external expectation, but when we connect to what truly motivates us, the fog begins to clear.

In a recent training I was introduced to Daniel Goleman's model on emotional intelligence, that comprises five essential competencies, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. Among these it became clear to me that motivation is necessary fuel for follow through and sustaining purpose driven action. I understood this to be intrinsic motivation, the deep alignment between our decisions and what truly matters to us: values, vision, legacy. That's what energizes meaningful progress and the kind of juicy personal growth and development stuff I am interested in.

Here’s a question I offer as a moment of presence:

“What is really important to you? And based on this, which decision would you make?"

Then I ask to Pause. Breathe. Let go of the external noise. And instead, encourage folks to focus on the why this matters internally. This is where real clarity and conviction live.

I believe that in every role, motivation isn’t just a feeling, it’s a form of leadership. It guides us through complexity, invites learning, and brings heart to every decision. And when it’s rooted in emotional intelligence, it becomes our guiding north star.

So dear reader, in your next moment of doubt, hold this question close:

What is motivating me at my core?

And then get quiet.
And watch as decisions become steps in a journey you choose, with confidence, clarity, and heart.
